The society's annual meeting featured a panel of MELTON SCHOLARS discussing highlights of the acclaimed Melton program in Jewish studies. Participating were Rabbi Shai Finkelstein, Lynnie Mirvis, and Cantor David Julian, program instructors, and Mimi Grossman, moderator. A brief meeting took place to install the organization's new officers.

Members of the society and interested friends, together with students from the area’s Jewish day schools and Sunday schools, displayed genealogical projects and materials.

TOM FREUDENHEIM spoke on Grandparents or Museums: Who Are the Primary Transmitters of Jewish Culture? Freudenheim, an internationally respected authority on museums and Jewish culture, was a director at the new Jewish Museum of Berlin, at the Jewish Museum in New York City, and at the Smithsonian Institution.

Renowned scholar DR. JONATHAN SARNA of Brandeis University, discussed his new book, American Judaism. His talk honored Jewish Book Week and the 350th anniversary of Jewish life in America.

Memphis's own TOVA MIRVIS spoke about her much-anticipated new novel, The Outside World. Her appearance, in honor of Jewish Book Week, was co-sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women.

RABBI JOEL FINKELSTEIN, senior rabbi of Memphis' Anshei Sphard Beth El Emeth synagogue, began our commemorative celebration of the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America with a talk on Sephardic Jewry and American History. Rabbi Finkelstein was formerly rabbi of the historic Sephardic congregation in New York City.
